Distell statement: False news alleging alcohol trade to revert to Level 4
09 June 2020
We wish to draw your attention to an audio clip that is circulating on WhatsApp.
The audio clip alleges that our Group CEO, Richard Rushton, and other industry players – recently met with government where they were informed that alcohol trade would revert to Level 4 regulations.
We can confirm that this is blatantly false and fake news.
Mr. Rushton did not participate in the alleged meeting and he is also not aware of any such decision being taken.
As Distell, we do not condone the peddling of fake news and we view the contents of this audio clip in a very serious light. As such, the matter has been reported to the police to assist with investigations.
Our focus at the moment, like you, is to rebuild our business following more than two months of no trade. Unfortunately, times like this are also prone to disinformation and we urge vigilance at all times so that we are not distracted by such falsehoods.
