FASD (Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder)

FASD Radio Drama

FASD is the most common preventable form of mental disability in the world.

FASD includes a wide range of intellectual, emotional and physiological disabilities in children whose mothers drink alcohol during pregnancy. The most severe manifestation of FASD is Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). The main effect of FAS is permanent damage to the central nervous system. People with FAS are afflicted with lifelong intellectual, learning and behavioural challenges.

The Distell Foundation’s Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) awareness and prevention programmes target pregnant women, encouraging them to give their unborn children the very best possible start in life. Part of the awareness programme is a radio drama that aims to educate people, from all walks of life, about the effects of drinking alcohol while they or their partner is pregnant to ensure that their babies are born healthy and to support their partners in this regard.

The radio drama tells the story of Mary, a young woman searching for meaning in her life, who finds solace in drinking. After a brief relationship and whilst continuing drinking, she falls pregnant. She is confronted with the possibility that her unborn child might have suffered brain damage as result of her alcohol abuse. She manages to turn her life around, assisted by a cast of strong women, amongst whom her mother, a friend, as nurse and a counsellor/mentor. Her relationship with the father of her child is also positively influenced.

The radio drama will be broadcast on national and community radio stations in three languages English, Afrikaans and Xhosa. Going forward the radio drama will be used as a communication tool for Social Workers to use in their training or facilitation sessions.
