Sustainable Socio-Economic Development

Sustainable Socio-Economic Development

The Distell Development Trust came into being as a result of a B-BBEE (broad-based black economic empowerment deal) in 2005 between Distell Limited and Wiphold (Women’s Investment Portfolio Holdings). The deal was aimed specifically at providing economic benefits to women (via Wiphold), to Distell staff who had been in the company’s employ for at least one year.

With investments and in-kind support for more than 60 projects, Distell aligns with the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals and the 12 key outcomes of the South African Government’s ‘Programme of Action’.

Empowerment in the workplace

The DTI has led the journey to transform South Africa’s economic landscape through its broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE) Codes of Good Practices (CoGP). Distell has monitored its progress against these codes throughout its development. B-BBEE focuses on seven elements of empowerment aimed at bringing more people into the mainstream of the economy.
