Drostdy-Hof triumphs at Value Wine Awards in Canada
Drostdy-Hof, one of the leading global wine brands of Distell - South Africa's premier producer and marketer of fine wines and spirits - has triumphed at the International Value Wine Awards in Canada with two of its wines attaining Killer Value status as top performing wines under $15.
The 2007 vintages of both Drostdy-Hof Chardonnay and Drostdy-Hof Merlot were singled out amongst the more than 1,000 wines from 14 countries retailing at under $25, the price point of 97% of all wine sales in Canada. The competition is organised annually in Calgary, Alberta by Wine Access, one of the most highly regarded Canadian wine and food publications. The wines were judged during blind tastings by a jury of leading wine writers, industry professionals and the Wine Access panel of experts. The official results will appear in the October / November 2008 issue of Wine Access.
Independent of these awards, the Drostdy-Hof Merlot 2007 was also chosen recently by the Toronto Star as a good value Summer Sipper in the $10 range with an impressive rating of 88 points. The Toronto Star appropriately recommends this "full-bore" fruity Merlot with its smoky aromas showing engaging black cherry, leather and cedar, and palate pleasing flavours of mellow black cherry, spice and ripe summer plums, as the ideal taste partner for grilled meat and sausage - South Africa's undisputed national food!
The Drostdy-Hof Chardonnay 2007 on the other hand is a smooth, well-integrated melding of fruit and wood, abounding with citrus and rich tropical fruit aromas. This Chardonnay is very versatile and can be savoured on its own or served with fish, white meat and salads.
Quality and consistency backed by a proud tradition, have always been the hallmark of these New World-style Drostdy-Hof wines. Bold and confident with their upfront fruitiness and inviting flavours, these wines are pure generosity in a bottle.
Drostdy-Hof continues to please consumers both locally in South Africa and abroad with its wide range of consistent quality, easy-drinking, value-for-money wines in convenient packaging and a variety of sizes, comfortably catering for every taste. These wines personify warm South African hospitality at every occasion, bringing together family and friends.
Drostdy-Hof takes its name from De Oude Drostdy, the original magistrate's court dating back to 1804 in the picturesque wine farming community of Tulbagh situated 120 km from Cape Town. Since the release of the maiden vintage in 1973, Drostdy-Hof has been cultivating a proud tradition producing wines that are upfront and fruity yet refined in character, from grapes specially chosen from prime vineyards.
