BAIN'S CAPE MOUNTAIN WHISKY

South Africa’s First Single Grain Whisky

Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky is an elegant single grain whisky which is skillfully crafted at Distell’s James Sedgwick Distillery, situated at the foothills of the Bain’s Kloof Pass on the banks of the Berg River in Wellington. This whisky owes its delicate aroma and distinctive flavours to the finest quality South African grain and waters which flow over 850 million year old sandstone and indigenous fynbos.  It takes its name from one of the most picturesque and magnificent passes in South Africa and also honours Andrew Geddes Bain, the creative mind behind its construction.

Quite uniquely, the whisky is double-matured in specially selected oak casks. After the initial 3 years’ maturation period, it is released from the wood and then once again re-vatted into oak casks for a further 2 years’ maturation. It shows an exceptional interaction between spirit and wood to produce a mix of toffee, floral and vanilla aromas and flavours with a hint of spice softened by the sweet undertones of the oak casks in which it is matured.  The result is a warm and extended mouthfeel with an exceptionally smooth finish.

Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky is available in a distinctive, square 750ml bottle (with or without Gift Tin) with striking black & white branding.

THREE SHIPS

The Three Ships “fleet” consists of the Three Ships Select, The Three Ships 5yr Old and the latest addition the Three Ships Bourbon Cask Finish.

Three Ships has come a long way since Captain James Sedgwick first sailed into the Cape as the master of the clipper "Undine" in 1850. Nine years later, he established J. Sedgwick & Co., purveyor of quality liquor, tobacco and cigars. In 1886, the distillery in Wellington, South Africa, was purchased ... and the rest is history.  Today, over two centuries later, Three Ships Whisky is a world-class whisky produced at the 'state-of-the-art' James Sedgwick Distillery in the heart of the Cape Winelands, and is the preferred choice for local connoisseurs.  Three Ships Select - is a high quality blend of South African and Scotch whiskies and has grown to become the sixth largest whisky by volume in South Africa since its launch in 1977. It has won silver medals at the 2006 (also class winner), 2007 & 2008 prestigious IWSC in London. It scores 82 points in the 2010 Jim Murray Whisky Bible - “Good whisky worth trying”

Three Ships 5yr Old was launched in 1991 and is again a blend of South African and Scotch whiskies. Due to its big, peaty nose, its well-balanced, smooth taste and long, full finish it has been rated above several top international brands on more than one occasion. It won gold at the 2007 Concours Mondial International tasting in Brussels as well as winning silver at the IWSC in every year since 2006 and being class winner on the last 3 occasions. This year in the Whisky Magazine World Whisky Awards it received the recognition as being the World’s Best Whisky outside of Scotland aged 12 years and younger. Rated 88 in the 2010 Jim Murray Whisky Bible – “Very good to excellent whisky definitely worth buying”.

Three Ships Bourbon Cask Finish – the latest addition to the fleet once again gives the discerning consumer the opportunity to taste something different. The special release Bourbon Cask Finish was launched in 2005 and is South Africa’s very first 100% blended whisky with both the malt and grain components being distilled and matured here in South Africa. After its initial maturation period the blend is put back for a further “marrying” period in specially imported 1st fill American Bourbon Casks. This imparts a sweetness and spiciness to the product which has appeal throughout all the taste spectrums. It has been a silver medal & class winner at the 2006, 2007 & 2009 IWSC in London whilst in 2008 it took the gold medal & class winner. Rated 90 in the 2010 Jim Murray Whisky Bible – “Brilliant”

BLACK BOTTLE SCOTCH WHISKY

Black Bottle was first created in 1879 by Gordon Graham of Aberdeen and was initially sold in pottery bottles and jars.  Later a solid black glass bottle, specially designed in the shape of a pot-still, was imported from Germany. However, the outbreak of the Great War in 1914 forced the company to source new bottles and since then Black Bottle has been packaged in a green glass bottle, with the same distinctive pot-still shape.

Over the years, this rich, golden whisky has earned an excellent reputation with its distinctive full-bodied and delightfully smoky flavour and smooth, warming finish. This bold taste sets it apart from most other whiskies. The expert craft of combining only the finest single malts from Islay with mainland malt and grain whiskies has resulted in one of the smoothest, most balanced of Scotch whiskies.

Black Bottle is the only Scotch whisky that contains all of the revered malts from Scotland’s most renowned whisky producing island, Islay and is regarded by critics and whisky lovers alike as a truly exceptional dram.  Black Bottle’s distinctive bold taste and unique packaging immediately differentiates it from other whiskies.

Distell markets and distributes Black Bottle in a Joint Venture partnership with Burn Stewart Distillers in South Africa and Africa.

BUNNAHABHAIN SINGLE ISLAY MALT SCOTCH WHISKY

Bunnahabhain single malt has been produced since 1881 at the Bunnahabhain Distillery, found on the isolated north-eastern tip of Islay. It is pronounced ‘Bu-na-ha-venn’, which means ‘mouth of the river’ in Scots Gaelic language.  This refers to the Margadale River near the distillery.

What makes Bunnahabhain quite distinct from the other single malts of the island is its surprisingly gentle taste. The reason for this is that it is created using lightly peated malted barley and the island’s pure spring water that flows freely underground, away from the peaty moorlands. It is a taste that serious whisky connoisseurs will recognise as a very superior Scotch whisky, a taste that is renowned as “The gentle taste of Islay”.

Bunnahabhain’s three fine drams:

12 year old – in a gift tube:
Colour: Golden
Nose: Fresh and aromatic with a subtle smoke.
Taste: Light fruit and nuts leading to a spectacular malty sweetness.
Finish: Rich, full-bodied and gently lingering.

18 year old - in a gift tube:
Colour: Rich Golden
Nose: Honeyed nuts and a slightly sea-induced salty tang, followed by rich toffee and leathery oak aromas.
Taste: Mellowed sherried nuts and shavings of the finest natural oak.
Finish: Dry notes interspersed with mixed spices fading into a light salt and sherry finale.

25 year old – in an Alder wooden box with sold brass fittings:
Colour: Amber Golden
Nose: Sweet caramel aromas with subtle suggestions of oak and polished leather.
Taste: Sweet berries and cream progresses to a roasted nut and malt feast.
Finish: Soft yet dry, with a sense of lingering flavours of sugar and spiced oak.

Distell markets and distributes Bunnahabhain in a Joint Venture partnership with Burn Stewart Distillers in South Africa and Africa.
